A people’s person

Lovely pic of Ian. The number of accolades for you Ian is amazing, as a producer/Director you are an amazing person to work with. Talented for sure but your treatment and acknowledgement of other people’s talents was your great attribute. You’re respect and understanding for individuals and their difficulties in their lives made you stand out above the rest. I remember one situation in my life where I needed to get home quickly to deal with a personal issue and you had such a high understanding of family values and needs that you told me to go home and look after your family, you stated to me that nothing is more important than family. Although the show must go on for sure but not at the expense of damage to an individual’s family. Apart from your exceptional talents in TV production, I’ll always respect you for the way you treated me and other colleagues in RTE , you are one of the greats of RTE.

Never ever, heard;- that singing voice, or musical talent.

Ian was a Jazz-Rocker! OMG!

Ian was a founder member of the Jazz-Rock ensemble Metropolis, formed in May 1978. This is something he would probably prefer to be not made public; consorting creatively with a bunch of reprobates, such as Keith Donald (saxophones), Garvan Gallagher (bass), and Trevor Knight and Paul Barrett (keyboards). Metropolis may have been the very first Irish band to sport two keyboard players, and a very capable percussion maestro. Metropolis maintained serious cult status amongst both it’s fans, ably driven by such an accomplished drummer. Public performances were briefly paused between 1982 and 2016, while the band thought of a better name for the outfit. They chose the very striking tile of Metropolis, and since 2016, have vigorously performed at least twice a year to this present date.

Dessie Glynn, and the Alans with Families 2006

Ian, As a reminder of when the Glynns of America (Alan, Diana, Emma and Aidan) came to Dublin with my dad, Dessie in 2006 to visit, I have included a picture of us with Alan, Angela, and some of their children (as well as Kaiser). This was when you, Jane and Tamsen came by to visit. A number of years later, Diana and I had lunch with you and Jane when you were visiting New York City. We also got to meet Kirsty in New York at our son’s school shortly thereafter. Sending you best thoughts from the States – Keep fighting the good fight Ian and family.

Bingo!!!

I had the pleasure of working with Ian some years back. He was great to deal with and highly professional from start to end. I’m sorry to hear he is unwell and wish him a speedy recovery!!

Thanks For The Sticks

I knew Ian through my Dad, Les Cooke, He’s the vocalist stating in front of Ian on the kit is the shot I uploaded) he an Ian worked together in a number of musical sets ups when I was quite young..Ian I recall was the younger member of the group, so had a certain vibe about him. I recall meeting him on a few occasions with my dad, when out and about one day with my dad we bumped into Ian, from memory he was driving some form of sports car? Which in Dublin in the late sixties was pretty flash, to me back then, Ian had a sort of James Bond, Simon Templar sort of thing going on, just as he and dad stopped the chat Ian popped over to the car and gave me a pair of drumsticks..I have met on a number of occasions as a adult around the town..( Jane also has she reminded me) always time for a chat , a genuine enquiry for the family, a fond reminiscence of dad..nice to meet people who taught highly of your dad. Anyway then sticks where a prized possession for quite a time, so thanks for the sticks Ian..Take Care.

Superb Director and so calm.

Thinking back to my days in TV OBs, it was always q pleasure to work to Ian. I never once saw him loosing his cool, He was always in control, always well prepared, knew what he was doing and treated the staff with total respect and professionalism. On OBs, sometimes things did not always go according to plan, in such situations to have Ian directing made all our lives a lot easier.

Johnny Logan Memories of Our ‘87 Win

Hi Ian,
I found this lovely photo taken of us when we received another 12 points in the Eurovision in Brussels in 1987. I wouldn’t have even been there without you calling me privately & convincing me that I had to sing it myself. Remember in Brussels when the director kept missing my body movement as I hit the high note in the key change.?.Remember how you fixed that.? I do & I will always be grateful to you not only as my director,as a great musician but most importantly as my friend. Will always love you man even though I never made the time to learn to ski. Sean ( Johnny Logan) ❤️❤️

We kept in touch and when I was home a few years ago was lucky to be able to jam with Ian , Jim Farley and Chris Conveavy all ex row boys. Great night it was and great to catch up with you Ian after such a long time.wishing you and Jayne my very best wishes. Jimmy Harte

Ian , The Guy that gave us our Break

Hi Ian
It’s me Mike Nolan here you’re most favourite Irish member of Buck’s Fizz.
I have to tell you something Ian, I can remember like it was yesterday, when we had our first run through with our song ‘Makin’ your mind up’ and you came down to me and asked me what I thought, and I said to you , ‘the most important part is , when we sing ‘if you want to see some more’ I requested that everyone could see the skirts come off in a wide shot. That is how we won the Eurovision because of you and me ! As they say, in life, two great minds think alike. In are in my thoughts and prayers. Next time I’m in Dublin, we are going to have a Guinness.
