Remembering Ian at the Temple of the Heart at Burning Man

I built a big art installation at Burning Man in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada in August. Every year at this event a beautiful wooden Temple is built where people go to take their memories of someone they have lost. They create shrines, leave words, photos, and memorabilia, and sit quietly thinking of that person. It was a particularly beautiful Temple this year called the Temple of the Heart. On the last day the Temple is burned in total silence. It is a solemn and moving experience. I felt moved to remember Ian there.

One of the greats

R.I.P. Ian
You will be missed but never forgotten and for all the right reasons. Your compassion for your fellow man, your justness, kindness and your professionalism dealing with every facet of life. Now that’s a very hard act to follow. One of the greats if not the greatest talent of the TV world.

A kind man

Ian was a lovely man, and it was a pleasure sharing company with him when we were in Chatel or seeing how patient he was as an instructor when our paths crossed on the slopes. You and Ian together contributed so much to making our family visits to Chatel very special.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and everyone.
Love, Paul, Joanna and Eilidh

Ski buddy, friend and a true gentleman.

I can’t tell how sad I was to hear of Ian’s passing. You must be heartbroken. He was just the kindest, gentlest person I have ever known. I have so many fond memories of times with Ian. From Summers in Dublin to BASI courses in Scotland, Austria, France and Andorra. It must have been awful for you to see his slow decline but you know now that he is at peace. God bless Jane, our thoughts are with you, Kirsty & Tamsin. Martin & Deirdre.

Friend and friends

For a long time Ian and Bil Keating were friends and. Good friends they always seemed to have each other backs, hopefully in heaven the friendship will be as strong and they both will shine a bright starlight on us who are left behind.

To the beat of his own drum

Besides the amazing Bluesville Band, my early memories of Ian go back to the many sessions he did with us in Trend Studios in the early seventies. What a rock solid and competent drummer he was. In trying to find the words to describe Ian, I think consummate professional fits well. His talents were wide and varied, but always of such a high professional standard. Not only could he deliver that essential solid driving rhythm in his playing, but he was also technically proficient. His easy manner and approachable personality epitomized the leadership qualities he possessed – he left every relationship better for him having been a part of it. He was one of a kind – there will never be another Ian McGarry, but he has left us with wonderful memories, and his music will live on. Indeed, the world could do well to emulate this man and try to live by the beat of his drum. Fondly remembered, sadly missed.

In my thoughts…

Jane, Tamsen and Kirsty – you and the family are all in my thoughts at this very sad time. It was an honour to have worked with Ian, on both Telly Bingo and CrimeCall over the years. We’ve missed Ian in Studio 6 and that will continue. He was a gentleman and brilliant to work with. I am continually amazed at the fascinating stories from Jane about Ian and his career and life pursuits – from car racing to his passion for music. Rest in peace. With love, Aisling (Autocue)
